Howdy!
Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays! I hope you have some free time to spend with family and loved ones. I’ve had nonstop plans since I arrived back in Cleveland, so I’m writing a condensed version of the newsletter this week. I hope you’ll forgive me! Happy New Year!!
Here are some Things I’ve Been Enjoying:
For 30 years, a Florida man spent all of his free time constructing a megalithic stone compound in his backyard. He claimed to have used a perpetual motion machine to move the sometimes-30-ton stones, but no matter what the truth is, his creation - Coral Castle - must be seen to be believed.
I enjoyed this funny read about the rise of “Noodle Boys” - men like Timothée Chalamet whose lack of masculinity (and muscle mass) makes them attractive in today’s topsy-turvy world. Good on them, even if it’s sometimes used to make them the butt of the joke.
I started the Netflix miniseries One Hundred Years of Solitude, based on the novel of the same name by Gabriel García Márquez, and it’s incredible. I remember reading the book earlier this year and thinking “why has no one made this a miniseries yet??” Thankfully Netflix answered my prayers and - so far - it’s extremely faithful to the book. This could be my new Shogun!
YouTube legend Captain Disillusion is back with an SNL-based VFX deep dive that’s both a hilarious homage to the show and a pointless investigation into something no one cares about. I love it!
Surprising finds of the week:
Google’s new text-to-video tool is no joke. Check out this movie trailer titled The Heist, which was made entirely using Veo 2. AI scary!
Marv, the robber from Home Alone, is now a tangerine farmer.
Have you ever used Honey - the free browser extension that saves you money by finding coupon codes online? Turns out it was a massive scam, for both you the consumer and every single person promoting it. Excited to see the rest of this series!
Glorb, the musician who makes Spongebob rap music using AI, just dropped part 3 of his magnum opus - and it’s animated like a real Spongebob episode. AI crazy!
BTW - if you like Glorb, you’ll love Blorg. The internet really is amazing.
