Howdy!
I made a quick trip back to Ohio last week for a very fun wedding weekend with some of my closest friends. I was looking forward to breathing some clean Midwestern air… then I saw that a literal garbage dump caught fire just outside of Columbus. I could see the smoke billowing skyward from my plane. You can’t make this shit up.
Anyway, I made it back to Los Angeles for a very busy week of work before I leave yet again on Sunday - this time for Hawaii! It’ll be my first time in the state (I’m visiting Oahu) so if you have any recs please send them my way!
Here are some Things I’ve Been Enjoying:
The song "Goodbye" by Apparat came up on my Spotify shuffle the other day, and it reminded me of how much I loved the show Dark. It's genuinely one of the best series I’ve ever watched, and that’s saying something because it’s entirely in German (I watched it with English subtitles). If you haven’t seen it, and you enjoy shows like Stranger Things, Twin Peaks, or The Leftovers, you owe it to yourself to at least watch the trailer. It has three seasons and 26 episodes, so it’s not a huge commitment. I recommend going in blind!
In case you missed it, The Onion is once again printing physical newspapers. I got my first copy last week and literally laughed out loud while reading through the articles. Let me say that again - I was laughing, out loud, while reading a newspaper! That’s never happened in my life! You can support their work and get a year’s worth of issues for only $99. It’s worth every penny IMO.
How did people wake up on time before alarm clocks? Animals, jugs, and “Knocker Uppers”.
Foil Arms and Hog’s immigration videos are some of the funniest on YouTube, and their newest one - Middle Earth Immigration Test - is no exception. It’s a hilarious watch for LOTR fans. I’m thinking of seeing them when they come to LA in November.
Awesome news: Travel can slow the aging process! Continue traveling no matter your age, just make sure you don’t go somewhere that stresses you out.
Miscellaneous Music I’m Jamming To: I Made The Arthur Theme Song Midwest Emo - Echo Is A Band, On Melancholy Hill (Doomer Remix), and Sick of U - BoyWithUke & Oliver Tree
Somehow Alan Alda’s second autobiography led me to the Wikipedia page for Yuan Longping, or as he was known, the Father of Hybrid Rice. Having lived through a famine, he went on to invent a methodology for growing rice that saved billions of lives.
I’m including this separately from the music above because it’s worth taking an extra moment to emphasize - put on your best pair of headphones and listen to The Beach Boys’ God Only Knows with all of the music stripped away. Mesmerizing. (Full song version here)
You’re never too young too young to rock. You’re never too young to be awesome. And you’re never too old to be young. I thoroughly enjoyed this 20-min YouTube documentary about actor and musician Jack Black.
Guilty Pleasure: I’ve been playing a lot of Angry Birds 2. Boomer moment.
