Howdy!
I’m sure many of you have heard about the torrential rain we’ve been getting in Los Angeles, but if not let me be the first to say it sucks. It really bummed me out, which led to a creative slump and a few days of feeling sorry for myself. It’s not really the rain that bugs me, it’s the expectation that there won’t be rain here. So when it does rain, it sucks. Back in Ohio, I was fine with rain/snow - but I was also expecting it! LA can be a real letdown, another thing I’ve learned after living here for one year (!)
Here are some things I’ve been enjoying:
“Just in life, you gotta keep showing up. Just keep showing up… you gotta keep showing up until they give you all those accolades you feel you deserve.” I didn’t watch the Grammy’s, but I was inspired by Jay-Z’s acceptance speech.
Speaking of showing up - the Florida man who walks barefoot through the Everglades keeps showing up on my TikTok feed and I can’t get enough. Yoink!
The internet discovered the most absurd McMansion of all time and it must be seen to be believed. But is it more flashy than the home of Romania’s former president?
Do you like playing Mancala? So did people 5,000 years ago. In fact, they liked it so much that they carved their board straight into 200 million-year-old stone.
Not to be outdone, archaeologists in Morrocco discovered 90,000-year-old footprints on a preserved beach and others in India found these awesome carved idols hidden beneath the Krishna River.
There’s a whole corner of the internet dedicated to publicly shaming maps that don’t include New Zealand. Poor forgotten Kiwis :(
Autism diagnoses are at a record high in the U.S. - is that because most children are being misdiagnosed? A thorough, though highly controversial, article.
Meet the bison herd living smack dab in the middle of one of America’s largest cities. I’m surprised they weren’t mentioned in Ken Burns's The American Buffalo.
Linguists have discovered a new English dialect in South Florida. It’s not Spanglish, it’s something new.
Forty years ago, scientists invented a way to completely eradicate cockroaches… and most people have entirely forgotten about it.
