Howdy!
I can’t believe it’s already May, the best month of the year for birthdays! (mine’s on the 6th in case you want to wish me a happy one) I popped back to Ohio last week and it was 80 degrees every day, so I think it’s safe to say that Spring has arrived! Summer’s just around the corner, so now’s the time to start making some fun plans.
Oh, and if you’re in the Southern Hemisphere… my condolences.
Here are some Things I’ve Been Enjoying:
My friend Ryan made a Curb Your Enthusiasm-inspired comedy short and it’s incredible. The casting was perfect (I play a very fun role!), the comedy was hilarious, and it had a great original score. Plus, he shot all of it in a single weekend for less than $1,000. It really opened my eyes to the types of big projects I might be able to make with my amazingly talented friends out here. If you click one thing in the newsletter this week, make it this - it’s a quick and laugh-packed watch!
Speaking of quick laughs, I was in comedian Trevor Wallace’s newest sketch - When Your Roommate Is Addicted To Crowd Work
When do we stop finding new music? It turns out that there’s a pretty significant drop-off point when people stop discovering new music. Of course, you can overcome this if you actively try, but maybe you don’t need to? Maybe nostalgic, memory-infused music from your youth is all you need for the rest of your life.
I finished the Fallout series and was very happy with it. It’s probably the best videogame adaptation I’ve seen (outside of The Last of Us, obviously), so if you were a fan of the games I would definitely give it a watch!
Books are essential. Without a book, so often the child is alone. Meet the retired man who drives a custom “bookmobile” around southern Italy delivering free books to rural children (okay, maybe this is who I want to be when I grow up)
Check out 8 of the weirdest cave systems on Earth. Mammoth Cave has always been one I’ve wanted to visit, but those caves in Chile may have taken its #1 spot!
I love historical markers - those signs you can find almost anywhere that detail why the building, monument, or patch of grass you’re standing on is historically significant. Naturally, I was stoked to discover that there’s a database of (almost) every historical marker in the US… even if a lot of them are very wrong and racist.
I enjoyed learning the unknown history of Fort Mose, a colonial-era Spanish fort defended by former slaves. This led me to do a super cool virtual tour of Castillo de San Marcos, the oldest masonry fort in the United States (& a national park!)
For my Cleveland friends - writer Brent Larkin makes a compelling argument for why keeping the Browns stadium where it is would be a pretty bad decision.
I’ve been seeing a lot of AI-generated videos on YouTube (which is scary), but occasionally I come across a genre I enjoy, like this one - Alice In Wonderland reimagined as a 1950s film shot on Panavision 70
